Seasonal cliches...

Spring has sprung..the grass has riz...

Hey hey it's the first of May...

No it's only February and we didn't get a January thaw so I guess we can call this a heat wave. It may even get up to 30 degrees today! At anyrate...anything above zero leads one toward thoughts of Spring.

On the coffee front...we are drinking Australian Mountain Top coffee this morning..brewed in our brandy new Bodum Santos Electric Vacuum Brewer with timer, please. Lord only knows who would actually grind their beans the night before brewing to set the timer, but to each their own. I still the coffee we get from the vintage pots is still superior to this one though..I think we need to fiddle with either the grind size or the amount of beans we grind. Hhhmmm..that sounds rather coffee nerdy. Be that as it may, I think vacuum brewing will make a comeback..afterall they are making new vacuum pots now, even if the only improvement is speed/automatic where one doesn't have to watch it. This is the one I tried to buy in New London last week and couldn't find BUT did find here in Vermont at our local upscale cooking store. Yup, Vermonters will be on the cuttting edge...Hey home roasting has hit mainstream with our Pier 1 Imports carrying two kinds of home roasting equipment! We were impressed.

Speaking of vintage pots, um...the fed ex guy just arrived...I love ebay. Most ebay sellers just use the USPS..goodness! Only one today but the mailcarrier hasn't stopped by yet. She just loves us. I'm still keeping up with the carboard and packing innards. We won't have a repeat of last years fiasco with trying to rid ourselves of empty boxes. The days of "you never know when you'll need a good box to ship something in" are gone. Gone I tell ya!

I'll try to put together a post on vacuum brewing so you can follow along...off to open "presents"..

I like that vacum pot best... how well does it work?

It's short-coming is that it has a set brewing time..to fiddle with the body of the brew would have to be done with grind size and/or amount, I guess. Yesterday's brew of Dota Tarrazu was better than today's Australian Mountain Top. Ack! We used one of the vintage stoves with vac pot the other day and nearly fell asleep waiting for the water to boil but it made a great cup of coffee. Vintage pot and new cooktops is quicker BUT then you are back to watching and timing the brew. hhhmmm...we did use one of the "newer" vintage automatic shut offs...that was fine except for grounds got int he bottom pot. eeeww. TMI? anyway..we are having fun "testing".
